Lesson 8 – Conducting Sample Collection

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module you should be able to:

1 – Conduct the sample collection procedure.

2 – Use a digital refractometer.

3 – Conduct the partial sample procedure.

4 – Complete the relevant documentation associated with the urine sample collection procedure e.g. DCF, DCO Report Form, Supplementary Report, Chain of Custody.

 

Key Things to Remember

1 – Confirm the athlete’s identity as per the details on the notification section of the DCF.

2 – Inform the athlete of the type sample being collected (blood and/urine).

3 – Ensure that the athlete has a minimum of 3 for each of the pieces of the sample collection equipment to choose from.

4 – The SCP witnessing the passing of a sample must be the same sex as the athlete.

5 – If you are unsure of the origin of the urine sample, you must not record that you witnessed the passing of the sample on the DCF.

6 – Never hold the sample collection vessel with urine for the athlete.

7 – The partial sample procedure must be followed when the athlete passes less than 90ml of urine.

8 – SG is measured after the urine has been sealed in the two test kit bottles.

9 – Wait for a minimum of 30 seconds before reading the SG.
