RECENT DOPING CASES/SANCTIONS IMPOSED IN SA JAN-MAR 2025

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) imposed the following sanctions for the period of January – March 2025:

Amy Wakefield
Cycling South Africa (CSA) | Four (4) year sanction

Following an In-Competition drug test conducted on Amy Wakefield at the 2023 South African National XCO Championships on 15 April 2023, she tested positive for the presence of Phentermine.

Her period of Ineligibility began on 26 May 2023 (the date she was notified of her mandatory provisional suspension) and will be effective until and including 25 May 2027. All results obtained by the Cyclist in competitions that took place during the period 15 April 2023 through to 26 May 2023 are disqualified, with all the resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

Ms Wakefield challenged the decision rendered by the Independent Doping Hearing Panel to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Her case was heard and the sole arbitrator in this matter dismissed her appeal, therefore confirming the 4-year sanction.

Carina Horn
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Six (6) year sanction

Following an In-Competition drug test conducted on Carina Horn on 18 June 2022 at a Basque Competition in Ordizia, Spain, she tested positive for the presence of Clenbuterol. This is Ms. Horn’s second Anti-Doping Rule Violation in a 10-year period.

Her case was adjudicated by the Basque Government which had imposed the six-year sanction starting from the 13th March 2023. On 27 September 2023 the Athlete filed an appeal against the Implementation of the Basque decision against World Athletics and the Athletics Integrity Unit before CAS. Her appeal was dismissed, and the decision was upheld. The results obtained from the Basque Competition were disqualified as well as all other results obtained in the period between 18th June 2022 until 13 March 2023. The Athlete forfeits all medals, points and prizes for the competitions held on 2nd July 2022, 4th July 2022, 16th July 2022, 25th February 2023 and 4th March 2023 as these took place from the date her positive sample was collected.

Zaakir Badat
Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) | 3.5 Month Sanction and Financial Consequence

Following a test mission at an Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) sanctioned event – “EFC 113” on 9th May 2024, fighter Zaakir Badat tested positive for Methylphenidate and its metabolite Ritalinic Acid. The substance is a Specified Substance listed as a Stimulant under Category S6.B of the 2024 WADC Prohibited List and is prohibited In-Competition.

The Athlete accepted a sanction of three and half months effective from 13th February 2025 until and including 28th May 2025 as well as a fine to the amount of R3, 000.00.
