RECENT DOPING CASES / SANCTIONS IMPOSED IN SA
The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) imposed the following sanctions during the period April 2023 – July 2023:
Minor (Protected Person)
Judo South Africa (JSA) | Twelve (12) month sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participation in the SA National and Youth Championships, the minor tested positive for the presence of Prednisone and its Metabolite, Prednisolone.
An Independent Doping Hearing Panel (“IDHP”) issued a period of Ineligibility beginning on 14 June 2023 (from the date of Final Ruling) which will be effective until and including 14 June 2024.
Bafana Dube
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Two (2) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the South African National 10km Championships, Mr. Dube tested positive for the presence of 5-methylhexan-2-amine(1,4-dimethylpentylamine).
His period of Ineligibility began on 10 October 2022 (from the date of accepting a Voluntary Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 10 October 2024.
Maria Helena Jansen
Bowls South Africa (BSA) | Seven (7) month sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the South Africa National Women’s Bowls Championships, Ms. Jansen tested positive for the presence of Hydrochlorothiazide and its Metabolite 4-amino-6-chloro-1,3-benzenedisulphonamide (ACB), and Chlorothiazide and its Metabolite 4-amino-6-chloro-1,3-benzenedisulphonamide (ACB).
Her period of Ineligibility began on 31 March 2023 (from the date of accepting a voluntary suspension) and will be effective until and including 31 October 2023.
Molefe Kasonkola
Bodybuilding South Africa (IFBBSA) | Six (6) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the IFBBSA Championships, Mr. Kasonkola tested positive for the presence of Amiloride; Hydrochlorothiazide and its metabolite 4-amino-6-chloro-1,3-benzenedisulphonamide (ACB); 19-norandrosterone; 19-noretiocholanolone; Nandrolone (19-nortestosterone) and the Boldenone metabolite 17β- hydroxy-5β-androst-1-en-3-one (boldenone M1).
His period of Ineligibility began on 17 January 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 16 January 2029.
Ephias Mkutchwa
Bodybuilding South Africa (IFBBSA) | Four (4) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the IFBBSA Championships, Mr. Mkutchwa tested positive for the presence Boldenone and its metabolite 17β-hydroxy-5β-androst-1-en-3-one (Boldenone M1) and 19-Norandrosterone.
His period of Ineligibility began on 3 February 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 2 February 2027.
Aiden Oosthuizen
South African Rugby Union (SARU) | Five (5) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the U19 match between Cheetahs and Western Province, Mr. Oosthuizen tested positive for the presence of 19-norandrosterone; 19-noreticholanolone; Dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone and its metabolites, DHCMT-M3 (4α-chloro-18-nor-17β-hydroxymethyl,17α-methyl-5α-androst-13-en-3α-ol), 6β-hydroxy-DHCMT (4-Chloro-6β,17β-dihydroxy-17-methyl-androst-1,4-dien-3-one); Metandienone metabolite, Epimetendiol and Tamoxifen metabolite, 3-hydroxy-4-metoxy-tamoxifen.
His period of Ineligibility began on 16 January 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 15 January 2028.
Gustav Laubscher
South African Rugby Union (SARU) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the U19 match between Cheetahs and Western Province, Mr. Laubscher tested positive for the presence of Metandienone and its metabolites epimetendiol (17β-methyl-5β- androst-1-ene-3α,17α-diol, 17α epimetandienone, metandienone LTM (17β-OH-methyl-17α-methyl-18-norandrost-1,4,13-triene-3-one), 6β-hydroxy-metandienone and 17, 17-Dimethyl-18-norandrosta-1,4,13-triene-3-one; Methyltestosterone metabolites, 17α-methyl-5α-androstan-3α,17β-diol, 17α-methyl-5β-androstan-3α,17β-diol and Clenbuterol.
His period of Ineligibility began on 16 January 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 15 January 2026.
Adriaan Almero Oosthuizen
Cycling South Africa (CSA) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in The Herald Mountain Bike Race, Mr. Oosthuizen tested positive for the presence of RAD140.
His period of Ineligibility began on 16 March 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 15 March 2026.
Collin Khoza
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at the Sasol Secunda Marathon, Mr. Khoza tested positive for the presence of Drostanolone metabolite 3α-hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-one (Drostanolone M1).
His period of Ineligibility began on 21 March 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 20 March 2026.
Donnè Green
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating the Cape Peninsula Marathon, Ms. Green tested positive for the presence of Metenolone and its metabolites 3α-hydroxy-1-methylene-5α-androstan-17-one (Metenolone M1), 16α-hydroxy-1-methyl-5α-androst-1-en-3,17-dione (Metenolone LTM).
Her period of Ineligibility began on 21 March 2023 (the date she was notified of her Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 20 March 2026.
Zayd Joubert
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at a Central Gauteng League Meeting, Mr. Joubert tested positive for the presence of Metandienone metabolite 17β-OH-methyl-17α-methyl-18-norandrost- 1,4,13-triene-3-one.
His period of Ineligibility began on 21 March 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 20 March 2026.
Zohra Crain
South African Powerlifting Federation (SAPF) | Nine (9) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the SA Powerlifting Championships. Ms. Crain tested positive for the presence of Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide. In addition, Ms. Crain was found guilty of Tampering with the Doping Control Process.
Her period of Ineligibility began on 27 June 2023 (the date she was notified of her Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 26 June 2032.
Leroi Le Roux
South African Sport Association for Physically Disabled (SASAPD) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the SASAPD Championships, Mr. Le Roux tested positive for the presence of 19-norandrosterone.
His period of Ineligibility began on 3 April 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 3 April 2026.
Diego Alberto Ruiz
Boxing South Africa (BSA) International Boxer | Four (4) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the WBF Junior Bantamweight Boxing Title Match, Mr. Ruiz tested positive for the presence of Furosemide.
His period of Ineligibility began on 9 June 2023 (from date of final Written Decision) and will be effective until and including 8 June 2027.
Johan Smith
South African Powerlifting Federation (SAPF) | Seven (7) year sanction
Following his (second) anti-doping rule violation after participating in the SA Bench-Press Championship, Mr. Smith tested positive for the presence of Ibutamoren.
SAIDS passed results management to the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and observes the sanction imposed, as a result of their ruling.
His period of Ineligibility began on 14 April 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 13 April 2030.
Darren De Villiers
South African Weightlifting Federation (SAWF) | Two (2) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at the Western Province Weightlifting Championships, Mr. De Villiers tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration level is 410ng/ml) which exceeds the Decision Limit of 198/ng/ml.
His period of Ineligibility began on 12 July 2023 (from date of final Written Decision) and will be effective until and including 11 July 2025.
Denvor Steenbok
South African Natural Bodybuilding Association (SANBA) | Four (4) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation at the South African Natural Bodybuilding Championships, Mr. Steenbok tested positive for the presence of Testosterone and Its Related Steroid Profile Parameters.
His period of Ineligibility began on 9 June 2023 (from date of final written decision) and will be effective until and including 8 June 2027.
Albertus Nel
Cycling South Africa (CSA) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at the South African Mountain Bike Cross-Country Championships, Mr. Nel tested positive for the presence of Stanozolol and its Metabolites 3′-hydroxy-stanozolol, 6β-hydroxystanozolol, GW1516 Metabolites GW1516 Sulfoxide and GW1516 and Cannabinoids/Carboxy-THC (The concentration of carboxy-THC (THC-COOH) in the sample obtained by method of GC-MS/MS using a quantitative confirmation procedure is 189 ng/mL. The concentration exceeds the Decision Limit for carboxy-THC of 180 ng/mL).
His period of Ineligibility began on 2 June 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 1 June 2026.
Douglas Lang
Cycling South Africa (CSA) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at the South African Mountain Bike Cross-Country Championship, Mr. Lang tested positive for the presence of 19-norandrosterone as well as Nandrolone and its metabolite 19- noreticholanolone.
His period of Ineligibility began on 2 June 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 1 June 2026.
Brandon Bezuidenhout
South African Powerlifting Federation (SAPF) | Three (3) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation from an Out-of-Competition test, Mr. Bezuidenhout tested positive for the presence of Drostanolone and its Metabolites, Metandienone and its Metabolites and Methyltestosterone Metabolites.
His period of Ineligibility began on 6 June 2023 (the date he was notified of his Mandatory Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 5 June 2026.
Shannon van Tonder
Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASAPRO) EFC Fighter | Three (3) month sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at EFC 72 Title Match, Mr. Van Tonder tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration level is 678g/ml) which exceeds the Decision Limit of 210/ng/ml.
His period of Ineligibility began on 7 July 2023 (from date of acceptance of a Voluntary Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 7 October 2023.
Seipati Peo
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Four (4) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the Elliot Madeira Marathon, Ms. Peo tested positive for the presence of Stanozolol metabolites 3’-hydroxy-stanozolol, 16β-hydroxystanozolol and 19-norandrosterone. An Independent Doping Hearing Panel (“IDHP”) issued her with a period of Ineligibility effective from 18 January 2023 (the date she was notified of her Mandatory Provisional Suspension) until and including 17 January 2027.
Thomas Oosthuizen
Boxing South Africa (BSA) Boxer | Four (4) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the 5th Element Promotions’ Battle of the Warriors 7 – Thomas Oosthuizen vs. Limbani Lano, in Hammanskraal, South Africa, Mr Oosthuizen was found guilty of Evading, Refusing or Failing to Submit to Sample Collection by an Athlete. An Independent Doping Hearing Panel (“IDHP”) issued Mr. Oosthuizen with a period of Ineligibility of four (4) years from 28 June 2023 (the date of the Final Ruling rendered by the IDHP) and will be effective until and including 27 June 2027.
Ramolefi Motsieloa
Athletics South Africa (ASA) Athlete| Eight (8) year sanction
Following his (second) anti-doping rule violation, after participating in the Elliot Madeira Marathon in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa, Mr. Motsieloa was found guilty of Tampering or Attempted Tampering with any part of Doping Control by an Athlete or Other Person Athlete. An Independent Doping Hearing Panel (“IDHP”) issued Mr. Motsieloa with a period of Ineligibility of eight (8) years from 27 February 2023 (the date he was notified of his Optional Provisional Suspension) and will be effective until and including 26 February 2031.
Mamorallo Tjoka
Athletics South Africa (ASA) | Eight (8) year sanction | Appeal
Following her (second) anti-doping rule violation, Ms. Tjoka was found guilty of Evading, Refusing or Failing to Submit to a Sample Collection. An Independent Doping Hearing Panel (“IDHP”) initially issued Ms. Tjoka with a period of Ineligibility of eight (8) years from 7 October 2018 (the date she commissioned her offence) effective until and including 6 October 2026.
An appeal was filed against the Ruling of the IDHP, which was dismissed by the SAIDS Appeal Board. The IDHP’s decision was upheld.
Daryn Utian
Cycling South Africa (CSA) | Four (4) year sanction
Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at the Sleepy River Flow Classics Road Race, Mr. Utian tested positive for the presence of Exogenous Target Compounds Related to Testosterone and Anastrozole.
His period of Ineligibility began on 23 October 2021 (the date of Sample Collection) and will be effective until and including 22 October 2025.
