Recent Doping Cases / Sanctions imposed in SA

RECENT DOPING CASES / SANCTIONS IMPOSED IN SA

 

The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) imposed the following sanctions during the period of (December 2022 – March 2023):

 

Minor (protected person)

South African Rugby (SARU) | Three (3) year sanction

A minor (protected person) player, following an anti-doping rule violation after participation in Craven Week. The minor tested positive for the presence of Metandienone Metabolite, Metandienone LTM.

Their period of ineligibility began on 10 August 2022 (the date of notification of provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 9 August 2025.

 

Tumelo Akeem Ramphele

South African Hockey Association (SAHA) | Three (3) month sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation after participation in IPT South African Hockey Association Championships. Mr. Ramphele tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration is 224ng/ml which exceeds the decision limit of 189ng/ml.

His period of ineligibility began on 16th June 2022 (from date of final written decision) and will serve until and including 16th September 2022.

 

Zoe Ndaba

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Three (3) year sanction

After participating in the South African National, Ms. Ndaba tested positive for the presence of Oxandrolone and metabolites, epi-oxandrolone, 17β-hydroxymethyl-17α- methyl-18-nor-2-oxa-5α-androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M1) and 17α- hydroxymethyl-17β-methyl-18-nor-2-oxa-5α-androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M2)//Amiloride// Hydrochlorothiazide and its metabolite 4-amino-6-chloro- 1,3-benzenedisulphonamide (ACB)//Metenolone and its metabolite 3α- hydroxy-1-methylene-5α-androstan-17-one(metenoloneM1)//Clenbuterol// Drostanolone metabolite 3α-hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-one (Drostanolone M1).

Her period of ineligibility began on 4th November 2022 (the date she was notified of her provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 14th November 2026.

 

Kelly Smith

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Three (3) year sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the South African National Championships, Ms. Smith tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration is 791ng/ml which exceeds the decision limit of 315ng/ml.

Her period of ineligibility began on 24th November 2022 (from date of final written decision) and will serve until and including 24th February.

 

Annecke Eyssen

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Three (3) year sanction

After participating in the South African National Championships, Ms. Eyssen tested positive for the presence of Mesterolone metabolites mesterolone M1 (3a-hydroxy-1a-methyl-5a-androstan-17-one), mesterolone M2 (1a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a,17b-diol) following an anti-doping rule violation.

Her period of ineligibility began on 6th December 2022 (the date she was notified of her provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 5th December 2025.

 

Melissa Zaeimdar

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Four (4) year sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation after the participating in the South African National Championships.

Ms. Zaeimdar tested positive for the presence of  Oxandrolone and its metabolites epi-oxandrolone, 17β-hydroxymethyl-17α-methyl-18-nor-2- oxa-5α-androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M1), 17α-hydroxymethyl-17β-methyl-18-nor-2-oxa-5α- androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M2)//Stanozolol and its metabolites 3’-hydroxy-stanozolol, 16β- hydroxy-stanozolol//Boldenone and its metabolites 17β-hydroxy-5β-androst-1-en-3-one (boldenone M1), 5β-androst-1-en-3α-ol-17-one, Epi-boldenone (17α-boldenone), boldione//1-androstenedione//19-norandrosterone//Trenbolone metabolite epi- Trenbolone//Drostanolone and its metabolite 3α-hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17- one(DrostanoloneM1)//Tamoxifen metabolite 3-hydroxy-4-metoxy-tamoxifen//Sibutramine metabolite(N,N)-didemethyl-1-hydroxy-sibutramine (M3+M4, isomers)

Her period of ineligibility began on 6th December 2022 (the date she was notified of her provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 5th December 2026.

 

James Sebopelo

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Three (3) year sanction

After participating in the South African National Championships. Mr. Sebopelo tested positive for the presence of  Amiloride//Stanozolol and its metabolites 3’-hydroxy-stanozolol, 4β-hydroxystanozolol,16β- hydroxy-stanozolol//Hydrochlorothiazide//19-norandrosterone//Nandrolone(19- nortestosterone) and its metabolite 19-noretiocholanolone// Metenolone//Drostanolone and its metabolite 3α-hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-one(Drostanolone M1)//Tamoxifen metabolite 3-hydroxy-4-metoxy-tamoxifen//Boldenone and its metabolites 5β-androst-1-en-3α-ol-17-one (1-Etiocholanolone), Epi-boldenone (17α-boldenone), boldenone.

His period of ineligibility began on 6th December 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 5th December 2025.

 

William Peter Paxton

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Three (3) year sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the South African National Championships. Mr. Paxton tested positive for the presence of LGD-4033 (Ligandrol) and RAD140.

His period of ineligibility began on 7th November 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 7th November 2025.

 

Wesley Schourie

Bodybuilding South African (BBSA) bodybuilder | Four (4) year sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating in the South African National Championships, Mr. Schourie tested positive for the presence of Drostanolone and its Metabolites, 3α-hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-one (Drostanolone M1) and 3β-hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-one (Drostanolone M2). 

 His period of ineligibility began on 14th November 2022 (from date of final written decision) and will serve until and including 13th November 2026.

 

Kurt Smith

South African Natural Bodybuilding Association (SANBA) bodybuilder | Four (4) month sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation South African Natural Bodybuilding Championships. Mr. Smith tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration is 665ng/ml which exceeds the decision limit of 288ng/ml.

His period of ineligibility began on 7th December 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 6th April 2023.

 

Abel Moodley

South African Powerlifting Federation (SAPF) powerlifter | Four (4) year sanction

Mr. Moodley tested positive for the presence of Dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone and its metabolite DHCMT-M3(4α-chloro-18-nor-17β- hydroxymethyl,17α-methyl-5α-androst-13-en-3α-ol); Mesterolone metabolites Mesterolone M1 (3α-hydroxy-1α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-one), Mesterolone M2 (1α-methyl-5α- androstane-3α,17β-diol); Methasterone and its Metabolite Methasterone M (2α,17α- dimethyl-5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol); SARMS RAD140, following an anti-doping rule violation.

His period of ineligibility began on 15th December 2022 (the date he was notified of his provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 14th December 2026.

 

Minor (protected person)

South African Rugby (SARU) | Two (2) years 9 months sanction

A minor (protected person) player, following an anti-doping rule violation after participating at Craven Week. The minor tested positive for the presence of Nandrolone (19-norandrosterone).

Their period of ineligibility began on 19th September 2022 (the date of notification of provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 18th June 2025.

 

Christopher Gift Walker

Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASAPRO) EFC fighter | Ten (10) month sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation. Mr. Walker tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration is 260ng/ml) which exceeds the decision limit of 198ng/ml.

His period of ineligibility began on 24th January 2023 (from date of final written decision) and will serve until and including 24th November 2023.

 

Johan van Staden

Mixed Martial Arts South Africa (MMASAPRO) EFC fighter | Two (2) year sanction

 Mr. van Staden tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration is 464ng/ml) which exceeds the decision limit of 360ng/ml following an anti-doping rule violation.

His period of ineligibility began on 15th December 2022 (from the date of accepting optional provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 14th December 2024.

 

Kelvin Edwin Theunis

Bowls South Africa (BSA) athlete | Five (5) month sanction

 Following an anti-doping rule violation after participating the South Africa National Mens Bowls Championships, Mr. Theunis tested positive for the presence of Ephedrine (the level is 19.7 μg/ml, which is above the decision limit of 13.2 μg/ml. 

 His period of ineligibility began on 28th November 2022 (from the date of accepting optional provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 27th April 2023.

 

Monia Stroebel

South African Weightlifting Federation (SAWF) weightlifter | Four (4) year sanction

After participating in the South African Weightlifting Championships. Ms. Stroebel tested positive for the presence of Oxandrolone Metabolites Epioxandrolone, 17b-hydroxymethyl-17a-methyl-18-nor-2-oxa5a– androsta-13-en-3-one (Ox M1), 17a-hydroxymethyl-17b-methyl-18-nor-2-oxa5a-androsta- 13-en-3-one (Ox M2) and Clenbuterol.

Her period of ineligibility began on 15th December 2022 (the date she was notified of her provisional suspension) and will serve until and including 14th December 2026.

 

Winchester Scott

South African Hockey Association (SAHA) | Two (2) year sanction

Following an anti-doping rule violation after participation in IPT South African Hockey Association Championships. Mr. Scott tested positive for the presence of Cannabinoids/Carboxy THC (The concentration was 506ng/ml which exceeds the decision limit of 270ng/ml in his first sample and 418ng which exceeds the decision limit of 252ng/ml in his second sample). Mr Scott provided two samples.

His period of ineligibility began on 3rd March 2023 (from date of final written decision) and will serve until and including 2nd March 2025.
