ADVISORY: SAIDS ANTI-DOPING TESTING DURING THE PERIOD OF RAMADAN

Ramadan is regarded as one of the holiest months of the year for Muslims. During this time, Muslims engage in fasting from food and drink during daylight hours. The month serves as an opportunity for self-discipline, gratitude, and heightened compassion for those less fortunate.

ATHLETES ELIGIBLE FOR TESTING
The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) is the national anti-doping organisation entrusted with ensuring that sports remain free from prohibited substances. As part of its mission to safeguard fair play, SAIDS conducts testing for athletes at various levels of their sporting careers. Athletes are eligible for both in-competition and out-of-competition testing, in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC) and the International Standard for Testing and Investigations
(ISTI).

This policy extends to Muslim athletes during the month of Ramadan, including fasting periods. It is important to note that refusal or failure to comply with anti-doping testing requirements may be classified as an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV), which could result in a sanction.

Our Sample Collection Personnel (SCP) are trained to manage these situations with the utmost respect for the athlete’s religious practices and personal rights.

COMPLIANCE AND FEEDBACK
We encourage all Muslim athletes to adhere to the anti-doping testing regulations while observing the sacred period of Ramadan. We also welcome your feedback regarding your experience with testing during this period. Your insights will help us improve our standards and practices.

For any further information or queries, please do not hesitate to contact SAIDS at: fahmy@saids.org.za.

Wishing all athletes, a blessed and successful Ramadan.
