Learning Objectives
At the end of this module you should be able to:
1 – Know what sample collection equipment is required for the various blood sample analysis.
2 – Know the blood sample collection procedure.
3 – Know how to complete the relevant documentation associated with the blood sample collection procedure e.g. DCF, ABP Supplementary Report, Blood Chain of Custody.
Key Things to Remember
1 – Start the temperature data logger and place it in the storage device at the start of the test mission.
2 – Do not collect a GH blood sample within 30 minutes from the time that the athlete has completed a training session or competition.
3 – Do not collect an ABP blood sample within 2 hours from the time that the athlete has completed a training session or competition.
4 – A and B samples are required for HBOCs (Haemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers), EPO (Erythropoietin) and GH (Growth Hormone).
5 – The athlete must remain seated for 10 minutes before the blood sample is collected.
6 – Invert the tubes three times after sufficient blood has been collected.
7 – Complete an ABP Supplementary Report Form for ABP sample collection.
8 – The venipuncture process can only be attempted a maximum of three times.
